Non-Profit Organization to Host Kick-Off Event April 24

Carbondale, IL - A new non-profit organization in Carbondale, The Foundation for Family Enhancement and Enrichment Program, is throwing a kick-off fund-raising event, Family Fun Day, on April 24 from 11-4 p.m.

The event will provide entertainment for the whole family featuring a basketball free-throw contest, hoola-hoop contest, special activity booths for younger children, food, a D.J., and martial arts demonstrations.  Rich Rowell, a black belt in Tae Kwon Do will demonstrate his prowess in a kick-a-thon sponsored by Harbaugh’s Café, Phoenix Cycles and Saluki Central.

Over 20 businesses from Carbondale and surrounding communities have made a number of contributions which will help raise funds for the Foundation in a silent auction, door prizes, and prizes for contests.   “Contributions have been abundant, and those who come out for the event have a great chance of leaving with something more than just a fun time,” event coordinator Morgan Greif said.

The Foundation is located at the former Carbondale Community High School at 880 W. High St., across from Hollywood Video.  “We jumped at the opportunity to keep this building visible and a part of the community,” executive director of The Foundation Jeff Ratajczak said.

According to Ratajczak and others at The Foundation, the organization’s purpose in the community is to better individual’s confidence, health and well-being.  With recreational and educational programs, including martial arts training, theatre programs and total fitness instruction to name a few, The Foundation will offer new opportunities for those people in the community who are in need.

“Southern Illinois has the largest number per capita of underprivileged children in the state – even more than Chicago” pointed out founder Master Thomas Black.  “At The Foundation we plan to bring families together and provide structured activities at low or no cost where kids can be around positive people,” Black said.

Alliances have been formed with the Teen Center, Parks and Recreation Department, Neighborhood organizations and the School District.  Planned programs to be offered are martial arts instruction, fitness center, theatre programs, massage therapy, social services through affiliate tenants, seminars, tournaments, recreation and other competitive learning opportunities.
