Where there's smoke . . .
There's a yard sign around town that touts "Smoke-Free Carbondale" with a web address that leads to a .PDF file Smoke-Free Carbondale for organizations to circulate endorsing efforts by Smoke-Free Carbondale to "Protect the public health and welfare by prohibiting smoking in public places and places of employment." This week, the Chamber of Commerce sent out a questionnaire polling membership's opinion of the measure. Read more in the DE.
But speaking of smoke and movement, you're probably wondering: what about the collapse of WTC Tower 7 on 9/11/01 by controlled demolition? Yeah, that's what it looks like in this 7-minute video on YouTube. Even a Smoke-Free ordinance could not have prevented it. But who? why? how? These questions need to be asked by a New Inquiry into 9/11. I've been asking people around town if they've heard of the 9/11 Truth movement. Most don't know much about it -- it's somewhat like Stephen Colbert's "Truthiness" movement in its wide appeal, but it's based on evidence, not gut feelings.
Since he went on air, a few months ago, I've become a huge fan of Colbert, who follows Jon Stewart on Comedy Central. So I've decided that local blogger Peter Gregory is like Colbert to my Stewart (local blogwise). Looking over my posts in the first two years, I see Peter has the same kind of energy and dedication to the cause of a better Carbondale. So I'm honored to be his 'set up man'. To paraphrase Mr. Stewart: "Ladies and Gentlemen . . . my good friend, Peter Gregory, over at the Business and SIU Commentary blog: Peter!"

Regarding Smoke Free Carbondale: there is a petition floating around endorsing free smoking. There is a large copy posted behind the bar at PK's, and you can probably sign the petition there too.
Several folks have approached with the petition... i signed the first one.. though many people support smokeless establishments, i support simple freedom.
& Controlled Demoltion is a corporation, which specializes in quickly bringing buildings straight down into their footprints.
& WTC 7?
anyway, yeah you and Peter do tend towards the prolific when it comes to local commentary. Aren't you glad you blog? That way no editors are breathing down your throat to kill controversial passages or politically untasty subject matter!
The company Control Demolition had the job of clearing the rubble at the WTC.
Actually, I would love to have an editor. . . . Or a girlfriend with a journalism degree -- i wouldn't her breathing down my throat, or neck. ;-)
But, yes, I'm glad I don't have to answer to an editor, but it would be nice to have one to ask every so often.
From a profit standpoint, smoke-free is the way to go. I read an intersting article about Westrn Hotels recently. The chain had 8% of its rooms reserved for smokers and decided to eliminate them, going smoke free. They expected a drop in revenues but non smokers took up the slack within 3 months. Profits are up also, because the company spends less cleaning the rooms up.
