Monday morning quarterback

Big win vs. Big Ten
On Saturday, former DuQuoin H.S. quarterback, Nick Hill played a great game, throwing four touchdowns as the Salukis (2-0) came from behind to become the first Gateway Conference school ever to take down a Big Ten opponent -- stunning Indiana 35-28 in Bloomington. Details at Saluki Sports (whose photo this is.)

How great was that!? I'm asking you, because I didn't see the game. But wins like this one can't help but improve enrollment at the university down the road, maugre blogger PG's opinion that academic quality -- not athletics -- is what attracts students. He notes that while SIU's athletic performance is tops, enrollment has decreased, while other Illinois public universities enrollment has increased.

I didn't make it to Murphysboro Apple Festival or the Carbondale Pig Out either, although many did, attracted by the fun activities and fine weather. I wonder if the City of Carbondale's business development specialist Kevin Baity will have the honor of wearing the pig costume this year, developing the economy like his predecessor.

I haven't met Kevin Baity yet. In fact there many new employees at Carbondale City Hall. It's high time I walk those halls again and introduce myself, and meet our new employees, and snap some photos.

At last week's City Council meeting, the City Manager noted the City's lack of a communications specialist. And the City will soon lose two of its best communicators, longtime employees, Don Monty (pdf) and Jane Boyd (pdf).

In her last article for The Southern, Nicole Sack asks the question "So who is this Rich Whitney, anyway?": Answer: a credible Green Party candidate for Governor, who's pressing on with his campaign.

At a venue near you
As promised, a 9/11: Press for Truth follow-up. . . . Because it doesn't have a major distributor, they work with an outfit called "Brave New Theaters." The only question is, the venue. On campus? Off? Church? Coffee House? All of the above?

No answers to these questions yet -- it's only Monday morning.

Update Friday, 9/22

The film has been purchased online, and I signed up with BNT for publicity materials. . . . Locally, two venues have been found for screening, so far. October dates and times, TBA.

If a tree falls in a forest and no one hears it, did it fall?

We can't exploit our athletic success if no one markets and promotes it. That falls on SIU's nonexistant marketing and promotions.

SIU's story needs to be told, first internally here in Carbondale.
