Caller #5

Lucky me! I just won appetizers at Houlihans by calling WJPF (1340-am) at the right time. Houlihans has excellent appetizers and Sam Adams beer, so life is good.

I've been thinking of ways to generate more comments on this blog. Maybe I should offer a prize to the 5th person to comment. Yeah, that's the ticket. I will personally award a gift certificate for a free appetizer at Newell House restaurant to the fifth commenter. . . . Mr. Right is currently bemoaning the lack of comments on his blog. His pleading worked back in March -- will bribery get this blog five? Let's see.

Speaking of the Newell House . . . the son of the man who owned and rehabbed the old Newell House Hotel in the 1960s contacted me recently. He has fond memories (and photos) of the building and the town back then. Now, he is a prophet in Africa!

Taking some time off now-- until June 21 or so -- or until there is a 5th comment.

Update 6/5/06, 10:15 am (at the suggestion of commenter #7): I urge you to read comment #6 -- and then participate in this experiment in blogvertising.

Dave,

I read your blog most every day ... of course, this is sort of what I do for a living, so that makes it a bit easier.

I'm blogger #1, so I don't expect the free Newell House appitizer!

Just thought I'd say hello and tell you I enjoy your blog ... and I, like you, enjoy Sam Adams.

Hey, I used your blog to get to the Arbor district home page. Maybe if you posted more complaints about the state of the world, nation, state or city like Mr. Muir does, you'd get more posts?

I'm the third to post a comment. If I post twice more, do I win the appetizer? :-) Oh, and I always check out your blog (as you know)!

I sense a vigilant audience waiting for #4 to chime in, so here it is. Go for it! After me, you'll see that it's ripe for the pickin'...for a few minutes, anyway! -Tom

Free food! OK, I'm in. I have always had good timing about these things.

Congratulations, Peter in Carbondale. I see you're a bit of blogger yourself! You should do more of it! Pick up your gift certificate at Art Lovers Trading Company (next to Newell House) on Tues-Sat, 11-7.

Now, just for fun, for those who really read this blog, and don't just skim, or skip the links . . . I'm going to offer dinner at the Newell House to the 100th commenter.

Let's see what happens.

To get you started. Here are some statements you can agree or disagree with.

Wendler is a wonder.

Cole is cool.

Simon is simple.

As you can see, these statements are based on assonance and alliteration, not necessarily fact, although they may be true. That's why they're debatable.

How about this one? The current Amtrak building should be relocated either across the tracks on Washington or to the so-called "Town Square" (moving it there would give it more of a town square feel.

Or this: Vested interests in the City of Carbondale are retarding the City's growth.

Okay, hard core readers. . . . a gift certificate for dinner at the Newell House restaurant to the 100th commenter.

Comment on the topics above, or whatever else you choose. None of that boring newspaper crap, though, please. Only cutting edge stuff. ;-)

I'll jump in myself when called for.

Let's see how long it takes. June 21 is only sixteen days away. That's ten comments per day . . . Not likely, but we'll see.

If 100 comments have not been made by then, a free appetizer will be awarded to the last commenter, as of the Summer Solstice, June 21 at 12:46 a.m.

Have fun, Bloggees.

Just as a suggestion, Dave..you may get more comments if you post this missive on the blog itself and not just the comments. I know I read blogs religiously, but don't always check to see the comments, as they often consist of too many "Right ons!" and "Nuh-uhs!" for my taste.

At 10:06 AM, dave said...

You are right (but not "right on!"), Anon. ;-)
I know that burying the free dinner offer in the comments will mean less than if published in a separate post. This is intended as an experiment, and test of hard core readership. I'm thinking that the growing number of comments, might get folks interest to read the most recent comment, and perhaps add one. If only 8 do so, it's okay. If no one else comments -- you (anonymous) win the free appetizer! Your reward for careful reading! And since you're anonymous. . . . just about anyone could come and claim your prize (after defining "missive").

Then again, if one person or two wanted to win the free dinner, they could comment back and forth until reaching 100. . . . or one person could keep qualifying and expanding on what she wrote, comment by comment, until reaching 100.

We'll see. . . . It could be a fun -- and informative -- way to pass the time until June 21.

My only comment is . . . no comment. :-)

This isn't a half-bad idea ... maybe I'll offer the first person (of legal age, of course) to post a comment to my blog a beer of their choice, on me, at a local establishment. Just maybe ...

Funny thing, a blog is not like a baseball field ... if you build it, they don't necessarily come.

Hmmm.

A blog is more like a porn movie. ...If you make it, they will come. ;-)

I like your blog so far....The Beer Philospher, although as a beer philosopher, myself, I keep it simple with two words: Sam Adams.

I'll be reading to see if you offer a free glass. ;)

Dave ... A little bit on Sam Adams for you on my blog ... no gratis beer offer yet, but it's coming! (in the going to be here soon sense, not the porn sense :).

Congrats, you now have 12 comments.
