Out walking last night around Orchard Drive, I met the most negative dude ever. I'll call him 'Mr. Head-Up-His-Ass'. According to him, the City Council is a bunch of dolts, and Mayor Cole a political climber, whom he blames for whatever problems the Eurma Hayes Child Care Center was having. I reminded Mr. Huha that the Mayor originally proposed privatizing the center -- getting out the child care business -- but the "bleeding hearts" and sentimentalists let out a hue and cry that it was the city's responsibility to run it. So Cole appointed a "blue ribbon" panel, including Seymour Bryson, who made some recommendations which were approved by the City Council. At the time, I was amazed the Councilman Haynes got to deliver his emotional appeals of support for the EHCCC and vote in favor of it -- since his mother was the director at the time. A fine woman, but still . . .

Since Mr. Huha insisted on referring to the Capital of Southern Illinois as "a shit hole," I quickly retreated from his presence, heading down the cul de sac, and across the little bridge. I should send his street address to next year's crop of City Council candidates. He'll really give 'em an earful.
