Cut to the chase
It got off to a start with an emergency visit to Heartland Hospital at 7 a.m., then a stop at John A. Logan College for an emergency haircut and poster posting, followed by an appointment at Art Lovers Trading Company with the great DeGraff for improvements on the script for his documentary about sand painting. After that, it was "Make Way for Jane Plain" at Art Lovers, then recording a radio spot for the upcoming Guitars Between the Rivers, Vol. 2 CD release party in Harrisburg, Illinois then picking up passengers at the Amtrak Station and driving them to the Super 8 for Blue Star Lines. . . .
Made it home in time to watch the Daily Show and Colbert Report. Colbert had the Daily Kos blogger as a guest -- whose political blog gets more than a half-million hits per day. (About 499,900 more than this blog, but we're working on it.)
Citizen and property owner D Gortonis speaking to the City Council as I write. . . . about Code Violations and Ordinance Enforcement. . . . Would like yearly housing inspections; instead of every 5 years. Gorton is also webmaster of the Arbor District newsletter. For fun, you can have a look at the slide show on the front page. To learn more about Code Violations and Enforcement, listen to D.
The discussion of the contract for printing and distributing the City's newsletter, the Carbondale Communique contained a surprising moment. . . . . After hearing some pertinent points by Councilman Jack, the Council voted. Surprisingly, Councilman Wissman voted against the contract with the Southern Illinoisan. Not surprising that he voted against it, but that he voted on the issue at all -- since he is an employee of the company that was runner-up in the bidding. It seems like one of those "conflict of interest" situations to "recuse" himself (not vote). But nobody said anything, so maybe not. The company he works for (Thomas Publishing) doesn't have a stand alone web presence (yet, or I'd link to it) but CarbondaleRocks.Com will take you to the Nightlife entertainment guide that CW edits.
Okay, now they're talking about paying for the two-year streets resurfacing project, and it's time for me to hit the road. I'll keep listening to the City Council meeting on my .mp3 player, as I bicycle around town pumping up support for this year's Bike 2 Work Day on May 12. Time permitting, some worthy excerpts from last Tuesday's meeting will be uploaded tomorrow.
Then a day of rest on Sunday. . . . and maybe a week or two or three in May.
