Location, location, ouch
I don't know if you're in favor of Wal-Mart's plan to build a Super Center on Country Club road and Highway 13, Bloggy, but yesterday Judge Dan Kimmel allowed Dr. Lelan Stallings appeal and also (BIG SURPRISE!) allowed a stay on annexation pending the appeal -- meaning "Murphysboro cannot annex the property until this is settled, and cannot hold a March referendum (the filing deadline has passed)--the earliest the referendum could be held would be November," writes Steve Gough, representing Friends for Fair Growth in Murphysboro.
Gough says his group "would not oppose a Supercenter on a more reasonable site-- Murphysboro's Supercenter could be open right now if Wal-Mart had chosen a site that people could live with (and not next door to, pun intended). Murphysboro is having the problems with this annexation because of a poor choice of sites."
It's a good thing Carbondale picked a good location for its own Supercenter, though I liked Wal-Mart better when it was located across the street from Murdale Shopping Center, and I didn't have to drive a car to get there.
So where would be a better location for Murphysboro's new super mart? Not so far out of town maybe?
