Cole and Cap on Kids and Caps

Carbondale Mayor Brad Cole was on Cap Miller's show this morning on WJPF-AM 1340. Among the things discussed: tonight's National Night Out at Turley Park (fun for kids for free); Eurma C. Hayes Child Care (money for kids -- about $200,000); the Home Rule Medical Malpractice ordinance revolution (Cole's Home Remedy).

Brad expressed his doubt that the budget projections were realistic and fear that the issue would come up again in a couple of years. ("It's a very emotional issue for some people") But he's committed to following through on the plan proposed by the panel he appointed.

Regarding critics of Cole's Home Remedy (restricted venue, pain and suffering cap), Miller said a lot of people don't "get it." As more and more Home Rule communities in the State of Illinois come up with their own medical malpractice ordinances, the legislature may finally get the message: the State's insurance malady must be cured.

blogitor's note: It's not like the legislators don't know there's a problem. Sen. Gary Forby was also heard on WJPF this morning explaining how a bill "the doctors would have liked" was passed by the Assembly but not in the Senate.

If residents of Carbondale have patience, an ordinance may yet be passed to make doctors more accountable -- as requested by Councilman Wissmann last month, in exchange for swallowing Cole's Home Remedy.
