Bike 2 Work Day 2
About 30 people showed up at the Bike 2 Work Day Lunch hosted by Mayor Brad Cole for Carbondaleans brave enough to ride the city's tree-lined streets to work this beautiful sunny morning, then to the Civic Center for lunch. The "Lance Armstrong" sandwich was good, but lacking in some of the agreed upon ingredients Kris Jones of the and drinks and chips and fruit--all provided by Brad (not by the City, but by him personally) were refreshing and delicious after a good ride.
The highlight of the event for me, was awarding Kyle Harfst the first (and only? annual?) Bike 2 Work Day distance award. Kyle rode 14 miles from Carterville to participate in the event, and Ruth Dalessio of Carbondale Trophy generously made Kyle a trophy in recoginition of his achievement. Don Lawrence, dean of Carbondale bicyclists also spoke to the gathering, as did Jeremy Hayes, city planner and bicyclist. Afterwards the few remaining assembled out front for a photograph and chat. More photos will eventually be posted on the Shawnee Network Photos page.Walking to Bike 2 Work Day
That's not me pictured here, but a guy carrying bags in front of my house to recycle for cash. I've seen him around before, but didn't catch his name this time. However, I also had to walk to work today, because the boxes of chips and paper plates I brought to the Civic Center wouldn't travel well on a bicycle--and driving was out of the question. City Councilwoman Corene McDaniel also walked to work, as did a few others, which is also better than driving a car, if you're not in too big a hurry. World class aspiration
