"BIKE 2 WORK DAY" in Carbondale

With the cooler weather and gorgeous scenery this time of year, Mayor Brad Cole thinks it would be a good idea for citizens of the City of Carbondale to get on their bicycles and ride to work with a friend. At least for a day, to see how they like it and encourage others to do the same. That’s the concept behind “Bike 2 Work Day,” on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, which is being organized by Shawnee Network Communications, in cooperation with local businesses, bicycle clubs, and the Mayor’s office.
For most cyclists, a sunny day is the only excuse needed for a ride, but Mayor Cole is going the extra mile to make “Bike 2 Work Day” an enjoyable event by providing a free box lunch at City Hall during the noon hour for everyone who signs up. Especially for the occasion, a special “Lance Armstrong” sandwich (real or vegetarian turkey, with Southwestern flavor) will be prepared by Kris Jones, Neighborhood Coop sandwich artist. The mayor will provide chips, fruit and soft drinks.

If that isn’t enough to brush the cobwebs off your Huffy. Top spokes-persons, Kyle Harfst, Don Lawrence, Brendan Collier, and City Planner Jeremy Hayes will say a few words about the latest bicycle route proposals for the area and other new developments in the two-wheeled world.

Still not ready to pump up your tires? After everyone has chowed down, a special drawing will be held for door prizes contributed by local businesses*, including a “grand prize” for the person(s) riding the longest distance.

Sign up sheets for the lunch are currently available at the City Hall reception area, at the three bicycle shops downtown, at G&S Furniture, Rosetta News, Shawnee Trails, the Interfaith Center, and the Neighborhood Coop and WDBX. People on the sign-up sheet will be given first dibs on grub. Whatever isn’t eaten will go to Good Samaritan House.

In the event of rain, B2W Day will be the next day, or the next, or the next working day.

Mayor Cole and event organizers urge all participants to wear a helmet and ride safely, using bike routes when possible.
